Alberta mechanical contractors work in one of the most gas-dependent heating markets in the country, with winters long enough that heating service never really stops from autumn to spring. Calgary and Edmonton dominate, each surrounded by fast-growing communities, and most outdoor construction is squeezed into a short warm season. That combination rewards firms that plan crews by season and price winter service from real cost, not from what the busiest month will bear.
The Alberta market for mechanical firms
Calgary and Edmonton are the two large markets, followed by Red Deer, Strathcona County (Sherwood Park), Lethbridge, Airdrie, St. Albert and Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray). Each large city behaves like several smaller markets once you look at drive times, which matters for billable efficiency: a technician who crosses the city twice a day bills fewer hours than one who works a tight area.
Statistics Canada data for 2023 shows 76% of Alberta households heated primarily with natural gas and 14% with electricity. In practice, furnace, boiler and water heater service and replacement form the backbone of residential mechanical work, while commercial and institutional projects, plus industrial work in some regions, give larger firms a project side.
Seasons and crew planning
Alberta winters are cold and long, and southern Alberta gets chinooks that can swing temperatures sharply within a day. A cold snap after a mild spell brings a surge of no-heat calls all at once.
For a service firm, the capacity question is how many technicians you can keep productive through the whole heating season, and what they do in summer. Cooling, maintenance agreements and replacement work help fill the gap. For a construction firm, the challenge is the reverse: summer is crowded, and crews pulled onto service in winter need a plan. A capacity plan that shows both curves is the starting point.
Regulators and bodies to know
For reference only; contact the regulator for any compliance question.
- Alberta's safety codes system covers plumbing, gas, electrical, pressure equipment and other disciplines, with ABSA administering pressure equipment and accredited municipalities or the Alberta Safety Codes Authority issuing permits.
- Compulsory certification trades require a journeyperson certificate or registered apprenticeship.
- WCB-Alberta provides workers' compensation coverage, which is a direct input to your labour burden.
- Alberta's prepaid contracting rules apply to some businesses that take payment before finishing work and sell away from their usual premises.
Programs shaping demand, as of October 2026
No province-wide home heating rebate was found on official Alberta sources. The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers property-tax-based financing for energy upgrades, but only in participating municipalities, so check the list before mentioning it to customers. The federal oil-to-heat-pump grant closed to applications on 2026-07-31. A new federal heat pump rebate was announced on 2026-10-08 and was not yet open.
For an Alberta owner, programs are a smaller driver of demand than in some provinces. Weather, housing growth and replacement cycles matter more.
Pricing and tax
Fees for Alberta clients are in Canadian dollars plus 5% GST, as of October 2026, per the CRA. Rates are on the pricing page.
How we would approach an Alberta engagement
For a Calgary or Edmonton service firm, we would usually start with billable efficiency and the selling rate, because drive time and after-hours calls in deep winter quietly raise your cost per billable hour. For a firm with both service and project work, the service-versus-construction mix review shows which side really carries the overhead. Owners in regional centres often benefit most from owner time work, because they are both the estimator and the busiest technician.

Frequently asked questions
What sales tax applies to your fees in Alberta?
5% GST, as of October 2026. Alberta has no provincial sales tax on our services.
Should an Alberta firm build a heat-pump line?
It depends on your customers and crews. With most Alberta homes heated by natural gas, furnace and boiler service is still the core. A heat-pump or dual-fuel line can make sense if you plan it as a division with its own numbers and training costs.
We take deposits on replacement jobs. Is that a business issue?
It can be. Alberta has prepaid contracting rules for businesses that sell away from their premises and take money before work is done. Check with Alberta's consumer protection office, then build any licence and security costs into your overhead.
